Health
The Standard American Diet is filled with meat, fish, dairy, eggs and highly processed food. The cholesterol, hormones, sugar and fat in these foods contribute to an epidemic of obesity and disease. The result is that two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese, one in ten suffer from diabetes, and one in four deaths are from heart disease.
Our levels of disease have skyrocketed since World War II as our level of meat-eating has more than tripled. Sure, we have better methods of combating these diseases with surgery, expensive tests and medications, but we have become accustomed to living with disease instead of controlling our health.
Health challenges are particularly high in the African American and Latin communities where high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes are even more prevalent. These imbalances are supported by the food industry and the government (through the USDA) which keep food prices as low as the quality.
A Whole-Foods, Plant-Based (WFPB) diet provides all of the nutrients needed for a healthy life and none of the harmful elements that come from meat and dairy. A WFPB diet also provides the fiber that is found only in plants. The bulk of this is needed for healthy digestion and a healthy gut microbiome.
The longest lived and healthiest communities around the world today eat a primarily WFPB diet. We have the ability to eliminate our most dangerous diseases by choosing to eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds instead of animals and animal products (including dairy and eggs). You can even occasionally enjoy a burger and fries (made from plants, of course)!
